Crag features

The settlements of New Tolsta and North Tolsta lie on the northeast coast to the north of Stornoway. Beyond the sands of Tràigh Mhòr and Tràigh Ghearadha there is an isolated cliff at Dùn Othail. The beach at Tràigh Ghearadha has some small tidal sea stacks and there is apparently some bouldering here.

Approach notes

Take the A857 north out of Stornaway and at Newmarket on the edge of town, turn right and follow the B895 up the east coast through Tunga, Coll and Back to the parking area at the end of the road beyond Tolsta. This is at the northern end of the lovely 2.5km long stretch of sand that is Tràigh Mhòr, and above the smaller beach of Tràigh Ghearadha with its sea stacks.

Walk north up the peat track, crossing the Bridge to Nowhere (part of a plan to build a road up the coast to Ness). Follow the track, from which the castle-like crag becomes visible, and when it ends continue on the route ahead which swings back towards the 89m highpoint on the coast to the side of Dùn Othail.
