Crag features

Clearly visible from Haytor, the hill containing the Holwell crags looks disappointing with a few low boulders studding its top. Thankfully this is not the case. Tucked away in the side of the hill is the deep and serious Holwell Quarry. The climbs can provide some exhilarating climbing with many being quite bold.

Because of the enclosed nature of the quarry, the routes remain damp and green for much of the year. Several of the routes require a good spell of dry weather as well as a thorough clean before being climbable. The quarry is also special in that it is one of the few places in the south that forms (although maybe not good) ice given the right conditions.

Approach notes

Park at the main Haytor car park. From there, the disused railway leads past Haytor Quarry and across the moor westwards. After around 1 mile, a branch of the railway descends rightwards. Follow this for a further 5 minutes downhill until it finishes in the quarry, which only appears at the last moment as a deep gash in the hillside.

Some years there are some ice climbs in this quarry - unsure which of the lines or grades
