Crag features

Quarried off-vertical good quality sandstone, a sort of urban Pex Hill giving technical, fingery and dynamic climbing - there is nothing easy on the Bridge Wall! Good routes, particularly at English 5c/6a with plenty of new routing prospects (mainly at higher grades). In early 2023 the whole loop line was cleared of many trees by the owners which opened up the cutting to air and light. In particular, it made climbing feasible on the Platform Wall (generally easier than the Bridge Wall) in the former West Derby station - and made the area as a whole more open. The quaint old village centre of West Derby, with its cafes, pubs and Tesco Express, lies a short distance along Mill Lane. A number of buses run along Mill Lane, and Queens Drive lies a short walk along Mill Lane going towards the city centre. Generally, the Platform Wall is about 4m high and the Bridge Wall 6m - the tops are sloping and brambly and it is best to drop off onto a mat. Watch out for old metalwork sticking out on Platform Wall.

Approach notes

Property is owned by Sustrans who manage it as a long distance cycleway. Climbing allowed on condition that no more development takes place beyond agreed limits (up to the first bridge from the former station going S).
Access from N at Mill Lane via the old station, or from S via top end of Walkers playing fields on Eaton Rd. Parking can be difficult in Mill Lane - there is ample room in South Drive at its junction with Eaton Road.

No Access Issues

The Crag is owned by Sustrans who have agreed that climbing can take place providing that no further development (i.e. climbing) takes place outside the defined limits for the time being. Climbing is currently permitted between the left hand end of the cuttings and the first bridge. It is understood that Sustrans may be willing to extend the climbing area if no problems are encountered with the present arrangement. A simple topo is available by sending an S.A.E and £1 to: Neil Davies, Brow Edge, Backbarrow, Cumbria LA12 8QW

Looks like Pekkie's done a good job cleaning up the ivy on the far left walls, most of the routes right of the corner are still covered though and look like they would take a lot of work to clear up. Some of the problems are worthwhile but the grading is all over the place, I think the newest photo guide has it closest to the truth.

This is the worst crag in the North.Bottle throwing youths, excrement, rubbish and graffiti. Its got the lot. Try the Cathedral quarry instead.

The playing fields in the description of how to locate the crags have been renamed the BILL SHANKLEY PLAYING FIELDS. The crag is not worth visiting in the june onwards as the cover of the trees prevents any sun from keeping the rock dry. not to bad during a warm spring though.

plenty of scope for bouldering. Needs a bit of cleaning up.
