The Exmoor Coast Traverse from Goat Rock (Foreland) to Combe Martin. Some committing if not especially difficult climbing, wading and accidental or deliberate swimming are interspersed with mind-numbingly tedious, awkward and apparently interminable boulder hopping through the world's second highest tidal range. The scenery is spectacular, the positions often oppressive and intimidating. Ice axes, a good buoyancy aid and flares are strongly recommended. Jellyfish and seals can prove amusing or terrifying depending on your mental state on the route.

Clemmie Archer and Cyril Agar, 1950s. Cyril Manning (1960s, removing swims), Terry Cheek 1970s & 80s - first completely 'dry' ascent(s)..

βeta: On Monday morning, as I review the weekends adventure, I feel like I've put myself through hours of running through thick stinging nettles, (barnacles) followed by asking the boys to beat me with bats. Walking down the stairs, I find myself questioning the pleasures of The Exmoor Trevease. It offers some of the most beautiful sleeping spots along the coast with incredible views! However, you don't get to see that part as you're running tirelessly with rucksacks over greasy, mossy boulders for hours on end, only to crash so hard till you're awakened by waves lapping at your feet. It was a great adventure with 4 unbelievably driven friends, but I wouldn't recommend this 'sufferfest' to your avid climber. This trip is serious and comes from years of preparation from Jim Blackford's hard work culminating with perfect weather conditions. Foreland to Combe Martin - 2D 6Hr Foreland start 10am to Woody bay. 11pm start to Hollowbrook night , 11am to Heddons mouth day 2, 11pm to Sherrycombe night 2 - 11am to Combe Martin day 3 finish - 4pm.
