Rockfax Description
This short via ferrata is by no means the best but does provide a good half day if you're in the area. The climbing is engaging and quite stiff for the grade with some surprising exposure considering its small size. Perched atop the Sella Pass, overlooking the Val di Fassa, the views are excellent, the masts on the summit aside. Col Rodella is a famous take off location for paragliders and on a good day it is not uncommon to see several hundred in the air at once - a sight in itself!
The south face of Col Rodella is also a sport crag with just under 50 routes that surround the via ferrata. The crag is not as good as the neighbouring Città dei Sassi, which also has a shorter approach, hence it is not covered in this guide.
Approach - Col Rodella is located on the Selva di Val Gardena (north) side of the Sella Pass (SS242 ) equidistant between Sassolungo and the Sella Towers, overlooking the Val di Fassa. If approaching from Canazei follow signs north signed for the 'Sella Pass' and the 'Val Gardena' on the SS48. At a fork turn left towards the Sella Pass on SS242 and follow it all the way to the top. Descend down the other side for 700m to where a tight turning left leads up a small vehicle track towards Col Rodella. Parking is available immediately after the turn on the right-hand side of the road. This fills up quickly during peak season. There is free roadside parking around Città dei Sassi. Additional paid parking can be found in the numerous car parks surrounding the Cabinovia Forcella Sassolungo lift.
Continue walking along the track (path 557 ) that leads up towards Col Rodella. Upon reaching Forcella Rodella turn left onto path 529 towards Rifugio Des Alpes. From the rifugio, turn onto path 530 and descend towards Campitello until you're level with the base of the main buttress of Col Rodella. Then follow a faint climbers' path off to your right passing under the line of the cable car. Finally contour under the base of the face clockwise for 5 minutes until you reach the start of the cable.
It is also possible to approach from Campitello via the cable car, which is well signed from the village. From the top station descend to Rifugio Des Alpes and follow as above.
VF - The route follows a logical line up the sunny south face with good protection and a well tensioned cable. Follow the wire up vertically for a few metres before a roof forces a short traverse left. A steeper wall above with good climbing leads to a rising traverse out left. A set of stemples assists with the next steep wall providing some excellent exposure. Easier climbing above this leads to the summit and Rifugio Col Rodella.
Descent - From the summit descend down to Rifugio Des Alpes on the large track. From there retrace your steps back to the car. © Rockfax
