5895m. More interesting and challenging than the standard scree slogs to the top. From a base at approximately 4850m on the site of the former Arrow Glacier an Alpine start is advised to ascend scree initially before technically simple but exposed scrambling brings you to the crater rim (approx. 5-6 hours from Arrow Glacier camp). A further half hour across the crater floor past rapidly shrinking Furtwangler glacier brings you to the final slopes to the Uhuru Point which requires a last half hour of steep walking to reach. Descent is standardly made via Stella Point down Scree slopes into thicker air.

There was a major rockfall on the Western Breach in January 2006 resulting in several deaths, and the route was closed for some time after this. It is currently (Jan 2009) open, but should be treated with respect despite the relatively modest technical demands of the route.
Great views of the Breach Wall can be had from the Arrow Glacier camp, Messner established a classic route up this wall via thin ice streaks back in the mid seventies.
