Overview

The Brunel University wall is a part of climbing history. Built in 1972 the wall was state of the art and the premier centre in the UK.

It has seen regular improvements and has played host to many of the climbing greats. In the 90’s modern manufacturing processes developed to allow versatile panels where holds could be changed, this saw a growth within the industry and older walls such as Brunel became out dated.

Brunel has since seen a revival as climbers have become tired of modern walls where finding routes is a matter of looking for the next colour. Brunel is sculptured to mimic all the excitement and unpredictability of real rock. So come and experience the closest the South East has to real rock.

Facilities

The climbing wall is located in the Sports hall and features a 7.5 metre top rope / lead / bouldering wall. It has undergone many phases of development since opening in 1972 and includes 350 sq m of wall surface with arêtes, ribs, cracks, ledges and overhangs.
There is also an overhanging bouldering area called ‘The Pump Room’ which features resin panels with bolt on holds which was built in 1992.

The facility is open for casual climbers, with in-situ top ropes on all lines, and in-situ lead bolts on 2 panels.

Please note, the Climbing Wall is used exclusively for the Student BUMS Tuesday & Thursday 5pm-8pm

Non supervised climbing for competent climbers is Adult Member £4.30, Non-Member £6.00, Junior £3.10. Payable at Brunel Sports Centre reception. A competency test must be completed, please contact Sports.Centre@brunel.ac.uk

A really hard problem at Brunel: this needed strength and power and lots of technique. Best left to the end ... © SIBL

Good routes, good wall, good people. Pricing is a little unfair at the moment, due to no monthly payment method, but the climb 9 times get 1 free is cool. Brunel University has use of the wall 5pm until 7pm Tues & Thur. Climb later in the evenings and you may well have the place to your self.

A small but excellent training wall with lots of features. Although some of these are very polished! The pump room is very good for bouldering with a range of crimpy overhanging holds to make up your own problems on. The people who climb there are always friendly, and if you are so inclined you can time it right to have the wall to your self! Especially when the students are on holidays! Well worth a visit, but don't expect marked routes or a high sport leading wall.. you have to adapt to climb at Brunel, you get out of it what you put in, and you can make it as easy or as hard as you want!

Still good value for money at £3.50 a session. Rarely overcrowded (unlike the Westway). Top ropes need to be placed and can be hired from reception for £1.50. The pump room is now fully covered with new crash mats (all joins now secured by velcro straps). There's a good range of climbing for all levels.

This wall has just re-opened following alterations to the sports center. It is an excellent wall for training to go outdoors as you can belay from the top of the climbs (some are hanging belays) There are some new bolts for leading too. As it is composed of real rock placed in concrete some of the holds are a bit polished. Can be very crowded - but turn up at an unsocial hour and you may have it to yourself!

Still a good training wall, though becoming rather polished. Mats getting old & a couple of bolt hangers look really dodgy - virtually no one leads here though. Great value for money at £3 though. Lot less busy than Westway!

If you want to toprope this wall, you will have to solo up an easy line and then move across the top, with the rope atached to you - so it takes a lot of time to toprope if you want to climb different lines on the wall.
