Ruffwear Performance Gear Supporting Working Dogs Product News

© Ruffwear

Ruffwear design and produce premium, high performance dog gear to enhance and inspire outdoor activities for dogs and their owners. The range has all the technical innovations of human outdoor gear but is made for four legs instead of two.

Ruffwear's involvement with working dogs began when they provided Search and Rescue dogs with paw protecting boots following the catastrophic events of 9/11 and they have continued to support a whole range of service dogs. In 2008, Ruffwear became the avalanche dog supplier of choice for ski resorts and international teams. As a result of this, the brand has continued to form relationships and support working dogs like Mountain Rescue, Fire Service and Medical Detection dogs.

Search and Rescue in the UK

Search and Rescue Dogs in the UK used the Ruffwear Swamp Cooler to keep their dogs cool through the high temperatures experienced last summer. The Swamp Cooler is activated by being soaked in water and works by reflecting solar radiation, whilst evaporative cooling pulls heat from the dog.

"I used the Swamp Cooler jacket on my dog during last year's lovely summer and was pleased with the way it kept him cool. I bought my first trainee search dog a bright orange Ruffwear® jacket nearly 14 years ago. It's still fit for use but showing signs of the hard work that it has done."

- Phillipa Lewis, Search and Rescue Dog Association South Wales

Inspired by Working Dogs

These relationships have inspired a new range of products focusing on service and assistance dogs. One such product, the Huck-a-Cone dog toy, is inspired by rewarding play between Mountain Rescue avalanche dogs and their handlers during training and is intended for tugging, fetching and throwing. Made from natural renewable and sustainable sources, this rubber toy has excellent grip with its knotted handle for even the toughest play during drills and training.

Another canine pro essential is the Web Master Pro Harness which has a lift and assist function inspired by the needs of professional avalanche search and rescue working dogs. It also features an oversized handle for gloved hands, and metal hardware for durability and function in snow and ice conditions.

When dogs are needed to access remote areas or difficult terrain they can be winched into position. The Doubleback Harness is a strength-rated belay harness designed to safely lift and lower dogs into difficult to access areas. It features padded belly support and leg loops for stability and weight dispersion, and anodized aluminium Doubleback buckles for safety and durability.
