Children's book imprint Shrine Bell publishes inspirational stories from female explorers around the world Gear News

Fantastic Female Adventurers – Truly amazing tales of women exploring the world by Lily Dyu was published on 3 October by Shrine Bell, the children's book imprint of independent publisher Vertebrate.

The book features a diverse range of women's voices including Britian's first female mountain guide Gwen Moffat, ocean swimmer Beth French, mountain runner Mira Rai, and Helen Sharman, Britain's first astronaut.

Dyu commented, 'I have a passion for the outdoors and wild places, and love to express this in my writing. Fantastic Female Adventurers illuminates the stories of other women who have and are exploring the world today and will hopefully inspire boys and girls of all ages and show them that anyone can achieve incredible things. Teaming up with Shrine Bell was perfect, especially at a time when there is a call for more books by and about people, and women in particular, from a range of different backgrounds.'

A proportion of the royalties Dyu receives will be gifted to a number of charities chosen by the adventurers, including Girl Guiding, The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, The Spinal Injuries Association and Surfers Against Sewage.

Lily Dyu is a freelance author and journalist. She is a keen cyclist and runner, and has taken part in the Manaslu stage race, a part-circumnavigation of the world's eighth highest mountain. She has written widely for magazines and journals and is the author of Fastpacking: Multi-Day Running Adventures and Vertebrate guidebook Brecon Beacons Trail Running. Fantastic Female Adventurers is her first book for children. Recommended for ages eight and above, the book is beautifully illustrated by artist and adventurer Chellie Carroll.

As a climber I would have really liked to see Lynn Hill freeing the Nose on El Cap. An astonishing achievement for any climber.
