Plas y Brenin: The Big Scottish Winter Weekend

From 30th-31st January, Plas y Brenin have teamed up with UKClimbing.com and Mountain Equipment to bring you this weekend of Scottish winter mountaineering and climbing. Based at Altshellach, our comfortable headquarters in Scotland, this weekend is designed to get you to up into the mountains as well as get you together with other climbers and mountaineers to enjoy some good company as you enjoy take in lectures and presentations courtesy of UKClimbing.

You can choose from the range of courses listed below which span a wide vartiety of levels of experience, so there should be something to suit absolutely everyone. Each course listed includes top flight instruction and all technical equipment hire, all your meals (including your packed lunch), afternoon tea and cakes, a comfy bed for two nights and two day's mountaineering in some of the most stunning mountains the UK has to offer.

 

Open to Trainees and Holders of the Winter Mountain Leader Award, this intensive 2 day course serves both as an update for anyone whose training or assessment course was completed some time ago.

Open to Trainees and Holders of the Mountaineering Instructor Certificate Award, this intensive 2 day course serves both as an update for anyone whose training or assessment course was completed some time ago.

Cost and Duration: £345 (2 Days)

During the winter months, the Scottish Highlands are covered in snow and ice, and at their most impressive. There are 282 Munros in Scotland which are all the more stunning when climbed in full winter condition. This course will cover some of the skills you will need to safely climb these mountains whilst ticking some of them off at the same time.

Experience Required: Summer hillwalking and a good level of fitness

Cost and Duration: £310 (2 Days)

This is an introductory course for those with little experience in avalanche avoidance or forecasting in the mountains of the UK. It is a practical course supported by some theoretical sessions.

Experience Required: Previous winter hillwalking experience with use of axe and crampons

Cost and Duration: £325 (2 Days)

Two days of intensive winter skills. Use and choice of ice axe and crampons, equipment selection, winter navigation and self-arrest are all covered.

Experience Required: Summer hillwalking

Cost and Duration: £310 (2 Days)

Although the fundamental techniques involved in navigating are the same regardless of the seasons, winter brings with it unique challenges. This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to help you deal with navigating in fading light or poor conditions, anticipating and dealing with increased risk from flooding or high winds and how to plan and follow your route in extreme weather.

Experience Required: Basic understanding of navigation

Cost and Duration: £310 (2 Days)

This course aims to turn the dedicated hillwalker into a true 'mountaineer', combining practical instruction with ascents of many of the finest summits in the Western Highlands. Developing your winter skills on steeper snow and winter scrambling terrain, you will cover ice axe and crampon work, winter navigation, and avalanche risk assessment and decision making.

Experience Required: Some experience with axe and crampons would be very useful on this course, as would a good level of summer hill walking fitness

Cost and Duration: £325 (2 Days)

In a group of two, you'll accompany our instructor as you make your way up and over some of the most spectacular ridges in the UK using a rope, ice axe and crampons wherever necessary to overcome the complex challenges that winter conditions add to the adventure.

Experience Required: A good level a hillwalking fitness, a head for heights and a thirst for adventure
