"A brilliant autobiography by a talented writer, full of humour with the occasional dark moment. The best mountaineering book I've read in a long time!

The most compelling thing about these tales is that they are 'our tales', the tales of mountain lovers. If you've ever enjoyed the 'pleasures' of being cold and wet on a mountain, being lost in a blizzard, or any of the other daft things that climbers and mountaineers do, you will enjoy this book. It tells our story, the stories of mountain folk."

Paul Sharrock Mountaineer and blogger

The Last Hillwalker follows John's long and varied walking and climbing career, progressing from early walks as a schoolboy in the Lake District on to the Alps, ice climbing in Canada and his participation in the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team. The book tells the story of a whole generation's love affair with the hills and asks some deeper questions about our changing relationship with mountains and nature. Despite being peppered with a wry humour the book also looks at some of the darker sides of mountaineering.

John Burns says: -

I was never a tiger, I was more of a pussy cat. I wanted to write the story of the average mountaineer, of my years in the mountains and of a generation of climbers and hillwalkers. I think our story is one worth telling. Above all, I want to put the fun back into the enjoyment of the hills.

Reviews

Neil Reid, Scottish Mountaineer

A compulsively readable book that, with insight and humour, takes the reader through a life's journey on the hills and mountains. There's humour here, and drama, and moments which bring a lump to the throat.

Kevin Woods, UKHillwalking

A book by frequent UKH contributor John Burns that explores the relationship between man and nature, our evolving attitudes to the hills, and the way we push the envelope ever-further in a bid to know and understand these wild places.

The book is a reflection of all of us who use the hills recreationally, and develop a bond to them.

What readers say
  • Brilliant! It made me laugh out loud many times, but it was the descriptions of The Great Outdoors that I took pleasure in reading. The writing conveyed depth and colour, not only of the landscapes, but of the characters encountered through the author's own journey through life.
  • Excellent journey through a lifetime of mountains, from the early days of naivety and over-ambition, growing in stature along the way. The author has a lovely light touch, but his irreverent style doesn't distract from his obvious passion for the outdoors. Highly recommend.
  • John and his pals - a brotherhood - were rebellious climbers and hillwalkers and subsequent stories of 'epics' - both fails and successes - are told in heart-warming detail.
  • This book is very funny and the text is peppered with wry and dark humour; the hallmark of the hardcore climber/outdoorsman.
