Dolomites : Rock Climbs and Via Ferrata Rockfax Cover © Rockfax
This summer Rockfax will be publishing a big new book to the magnificent Dolomites in northern Italy. This guide will cover everything you need for a climbing trip regardless of ability, whether it be sport, trad, via ferrata or a combination of all three. It features all the major areas and is the only guidebook available to have such comprehensive coverage.

The book is being authored by James Rushforth who, together with his partner Lynne Hempton, has spent several years documenting the climbs and VFs, and taking some amazing photographs for the book. Regular followers of the UKClimbing Photo of the Week competition have got used to James winning and you can see his amazing gallery here.

The Dolomites

Located in northern Italy, and representing a true mix of Italian and Austrian culture, these so-called 'Pale Alps' contain climbing of every shape and size. Single pitch sport crags lie beside kilometre-long traditional routes, with climbs which are steeped in history running parallel to modern bolted lines. The area is particularly renowned for its via ferrata, cabled routes predating the Great War which give superb access to some of the World's most striking summits. The metal wires, interspersed with breathtaking ladders and unlikely suspension bridges, provide aerial assault courses which combine the thrill of an ascent on rock with the security of a protected mountain scramble.

When Will It Be Available

We are working hard on finishing the book now although it is unlikely to be ready for the main summer season. We hope to have it for the late summer or early autumn. Any update on publication date will be posted on the Rockfax web site.

I have to say that this looks amazing and am especially impressed by James Rushforths photographs, really shows the Dolomites true colours. Well done and I will be saving my pennies for this!

Looks like a great book to a great area, but rockfax is a big format for multi pitch / VF? Is there any way to provide an electronic version without it being pirated or do we still need to photocopy?

I normally use a photo on my phone / camera which normally works unless the sun is bright. Back to the guidebook, looks good. Definitely sticking to the uiaa grades for the trad routes?

Yes it will be a big book. We normally advise taking photos on your phone to carry on the route, however this time we will be releasing the app version at the same time anyway (hopefully) so you can choose whether to buy the book, the App, or a bit of both (maybe book, with the odd App crag for the longer routes). Phone App sounds exciting. Will it be bundled with the book, or will I have to buy both separately? Really hope it's out in time for my trip towards the end of August, but it sounds unlikely...
