"Since Mountain Equipment began in 1961 we have been witness to an age of outstanding achievement and evolution in the history of climbing and mountaineering."

This month Mountain Equipment celebrates its 50th year with the release of a short film that looks back on this remarkable period of climbing history. The iconic British brand has been at the heart of mountaineering for the last fifty years having continually equipped leading climbers and expeditions from its earliest days; supplying the likes of Doug Scott, Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler in the 60's and 70's through to current cutting-edge performers such as Dave MacLeod.

"Mountain Equipment was started fifty years ago in Manchester, by people making down clothing and sleeping bags for their mates to use on their trips to the Alps and the greater ranges", commented Brand Director Hamish Dunn, "in some respects nothing has changed, we are still a group of people designing and making gear, just a lot more people use it these days."

The brand's clothing and equipment has participated in an array of landmark achievements; on Everest alone this includes the first British ascent, the first ascent made without using bottled oxygen, first solo ascent without bottled oxygen and the first British ascent without bottled oxygen. The impressive roll call extends well beyond the world's highest peak though to include participation in every British first ascent of an 8000m peak and unsupported trips to both the North and South poles.

The film '50 Years in the Mountains' was specially commissioned by the brand to mark their 50th anniversary. Featuring interviews with some of the most significant mountaineers of the last five decades it brings together personal reflections and rare archive footage to take the viewer on an intriguing journey through the last fifty years in the mountains.
