Brit climber, Malcolm Bass, has won a Polartec Challenge Grant making him the first Brit in five years to have managed to come through the gruelling judging process smiling. Bass and his team's proposal to climb the Southwest face of Rimo III in the Indian Karakorum was one of six projects to receive the Polartec Challenge grant in 2012.

Bass and his team will receive a cash sum and will each be kitted out head-to-toe in Polartec clothing. Since the introduction of Polartec NeoShell – the brand's first ever, waterproof breathable fabric - Polartec can now offer a complete layering system from breathable outer layer to warm, comfortable next-to-skin insulation. Bass will be climbing with Paul Figg, Simon Yearsley and accompanied by Rachel Antill.

The objective of the expedition: to make the first ascent of the Southwest face of Rimo III (7233m). The Rimo group is a remote and rarely visited area in the Indian Karakorum.

The region has a history of climbers from the UK

In 1985 Dave Wilkinson and Jim Fotheringham met with success on Rimo III, and Stephen Venables and Vic Saunders were unsuccessful on the South West ridge of Rimo I. In 1989 Doug Scott's expedition visited the area making the first ascent of Rimo II and the second ascent of Rimo IV. Rimo III's South Face is considered by many to be a beautiful and longstanding challenge.
