On October 3, 1984, Macartney-Snape, along with climbing partner Greg Mortimer, became the first climber from the flat and arid continent of Australia to reach the summit of Mount Everest. They reached the summit, without oxygen or Sherpa support, via a new route on the North Face.

Realising his opportunity to re-write the history books, in the Spring of 1999 Tim Macartney-Snape went for a swim in the tepid waters of India's Bay of Bengal, and then set off on foot across the Indo-Gangetic plain toward the distant Himalayan foothills on an endeavour to become the first person to truly climb the entire 8848 meters of Mt Everest. Four months later, after climbing alone from Base Camp and without the assistance of oxygen, he once again set foot on the highest point on earth. Dubbed the "Sea to Summit" expedition, Tim wrote about his epic adventure in his book "Everest: From Sea to Summit". A film of the same name has won prizes in seven countries. Tim has also made first ascents of other great peaks including Annapurna 2 and Gasherbrum IV.

Nowadays, Tim is a director of the outdoor equipment company www.seatosummit.com.au, which prides itself on manufacturing innovative outdoor adventure gear inspired through experience.
