Thermowave Merino Baselayers Gear News

HIDDEN behind the Iron Curtain for over 60 years, Lithuanian base-layer brand Thermowave has been one of the major success stories of this Baltic state's independence.

Founded in 1928 in Kaunas, Thermowave has developed base layer solutions for a wide range of the most demanding environments and users on (and off!) the planet – from deep sea divers working in the frigid Baltic sea, right up to incredibly technical fabrics for the Russian space programme. Thermowave specialises in using high grade Merino wool, but also uses premium synthetic fibres, often in combination with Merino, carefully applying these materials where they will be most effective.

Since 2000, the company has turned its attention to the outdoors, realising that textiles and garment designs which work for extended periods of time deep in the sea or even in space, will work superbly well for walkers, climbers and mountaineers.

Now launching into the UK market via First Ascent, it's not only Thermowave's clever design and styling that's catching attention; the brand's value-for-money is truly exceptional - Thermowave is able to leverage a high volume, high quality industrial base to deliver well priced garments for the outdoor user.

Range highlights include the cool-weather 'Merino One50' Tops – using 100% soft, light weight fine grade Merino wool, this 150grams per square meter fabric is ideal for mild to cool conditions, where breathability during high intensity activity is paramount.

Merino ONE50 Zip Top £75

(Men's and Women's available)

At the other end of the scale suitable for cold to very cold conditions, Thermowave's 'Xtreme' range is a unique mix of Merino and synthetics. A direct descendant of fabrics developed for the Russian space programme where very long-lasting performance, comfort and durability are mission critical, dual layer Thermowave Xtreme garments utilise the very best properties of natural Merino and synthetic in one layered garment.

Xtreme garments feature a fine next to skin Polyester layer to drive breathability and alleviate the itchy wool feeling that can occur when wearing even very fine Merino for extended periods. The outer Merino layer provides comfort, warmth and minimises odour. Finally, this outer Merino layer is blended with a small amount of Polyamide which dramatically improves abrasion resistance and durability.

Xtreme Zip Top £65

Features flatlock seams, extra-long back for tucking in and extended sleeves with thumb loops for added thermal protection.
