And so to film. If we put a video clip anywhere on UKClimbing.com within a couple of days several thousand climbers will have viewed the clip: see the recent shorts by Kevin Jorgeson and the ascents of Team America, Alastair Lee's short film of Jordan Buys on his new route at Earl Crag, Dave Brown and Paul Diffley's (Hot Aches) interview with Johnny Dawes and Nick Dixon about the Indian Face. Film for the climbing media is the present and the future. We like film so much it seemed quite obvious to run a film competition, a first at UKClimbing.com, so we have the MARMOT On Sight CLIP COMPETITION.
To celebrate MARMOT becoming the presenting sponsor of the Posing Productions' new climbing film ON SIGHT they teamed up with UKClimbing.com to run a film clip competition. First Prize: £500 of Marmot Gear; Two Second Prizes: of £250.00 of Marmot Gear, and as usual everyone who enters gets a spot prize. There were 34 entries. Thank you very much to everyone who entered and a huge congratulations to the winners.. The winners and their films are below.
The judges were Hugh Harris of Marmot UK, Mick Ryan of UKClimbing.com and award winning film maker, Alastair Lee of Posing Productions who said, "Overall very impressed with the level submitted to the competition - a success! " Alastair announces the winners below.
FIRST PRIZE: In the Handholds of Greatness by pascalbrown/unclesomebody
A great story summing up the fanaticism and satisfaction of climbing/bouldering. Loved the humour, well shot and very competently edited (nice touch to have Nicol's original ascent in there) with the all important appropriate music - as with most of the clips the editing could be tighter and it could move through the story faster but that's not to detract from an excellent effort at film making.

JOINT SECOND PRIZE: Meeting Paul Williams by Alison Stockwell
This had what many of the clips lacked - a story! Well told by Nick, who's great camera fodder, good to see lead trad climbing being filmed, the lack of lead trad climbing throughout the competition shows how difficult it is to pull off successfully. Perhaps a bit of context about who Paul Williams is would have been a nice addition but it works very well as is.

Although like lots of other clips it was a purely personal, nostalgic trip, celebrating what great fun going out climbing with your mates is - from a film making point of view I have to give it credit for being shot it on 8mm film! Also must have been a right faff getting it all digitised!
