Therm-a-Rest® Introduces the World’s Fastest Self-Inflating Mattress Gear News

Therm-a-Rest® has been perfecting the camping mattress for 45 years, and the latest pad is the culmination of that quest. For 2017, the Irish-based business is introducing the Trail King™ SV—the fastest self-inflating mattress yet. By fusing AirFrame™ Construction, which alternates channels of foam and air, with the SpeedValve™, Therm-a-Rest has created a mattress that inflates in seconds, and deflates in a flash, giving you more time to have fun outside.

Weighing just 1 lb 13 oz, the Trail King enters the 2017 market as a mattress light enough for backcountry travel, but its 2.5 inches of loft provides a level of comfort car campers expect. At £110.00 and €134.95, this makes the Trail King a value for campers who desire versatility in their gear.

The true magic of the Trail King, however, is how easy and fast it is to use. Just open the proprietary SpeedValve—which uses physics to draw in surrounding air—and watch as the mattress’ alternating foam and air channels expand before your eyes in a flash. Top it off with a few breaths by blowing into the SpeedValve and you’re all set. And when it’s time to get back on the trail, the proprietary, auto-reversing SpeedValve will allow you to deflate the mattress in mere seconds.

The Trail King™ SV is available now in selected retailers. For more information on Thermarest SpeedValve™ technology visit www.thermarest-speedvalve.com

Non-self-inflating sleeping mats save weight and reduce packing volume by not having foam, so what's the point in self-inflating camping mats as opposed to ones that take only a few minutes to inflate?

I was thinking the same thing but then I realised it has its own target market and it even mentions them in the article "car campers" this is perfect for rocking up to the camp site with bulky and hard wearing. My nice lightweight dainty half length mat developed a hernia while car camping the other weekend .

It's a long time since I've done any camping, car or otherwise, but 1lb 13 oz? Is that right...it's almost a bag of sugar (my standard weight reference), which strikes me as a lot of weight to carry around just for a slightly better sleep than a foam mattress. No idea how much my old Karrimat weights, but I am guessing less than half that?

I'm guessing that one advantage is that you don't have to fill it with moisture from your breath on each inflation? However, to my mind, the big question is... ... which is faster, seconds or a flash?

Can I control this mattress from my smart phone?
