An ice climber died in Valle d'Aosta after being overwhelmed by a mass of ice as he climbed a waterfall in Lillaz, in the municipality of Cogne, Val d'Aosta. Not Cascata di Lillaz then, but Patinnagio Artistico. Not that it makes much difference to the poor bloke.

I read the whole article. This was a very experienced and able guy with first ascents and well travelled climbing in the Patagonias. Very sad and as we come to the end of the season and Europe starts to warm after a cold winter. Extra vigilance needed .

Interesting how it’s the central section of the pillar that’s gone. Someone on that Fb page suggesting there are frequent fatalities in the same spot. Hopefully a little exaggerated? I backed off the second pitch a couple of years ago not liking how wet everything was. Didn’t even get to the pillar. Plenty of parties carring on past us though.
