Leo Houlding writes about this in his recent book, and talked entertainingly on taking his young children on adventures on mountains. His view is that young children are much more resilient and capable of much more than many parents give them credit for.

Absolutely, get the kids out! They'll only get more able the more they do. Of course every family will have a different take on what resilient and capable mean, and that's going to be down to the parents as much as the kids. We're happy at the easy toproping and less onerous Munros stage, but I suspect Leo's sensible limits are a lot more ambitious

Great article. 
our 6 year old asked us to stop calling walks adventures, “an adventure means I’m going to get wet and tired daddy! Can we just have a walk?”
