I think it really needs a cork insulated sleeve so you can hold the bowl like a proper pipe. Would also keep the bripe at brewing temperature longer; so small a volume will rapidly cool; may be why he found it a bit insipid.
I'm not a coffee nerd. But I'm a meths stove nerd*, so do I measure out my water and meths... Admittedly, measuring water does mean my food isn't too dry or too watery.
* brain is now pondering a meths-powered all-in-one bripe made from red bull cans...
