Can anyone recommend any climbing/mountaineering/adventure literature suitable for a ten year old?
I have a huge library of historical and modern mountain books, but can't find anything suitable for my grandchild.

I've seen a kids book by Catherine Destivelle in French (https://livre.fnac.com/a13180173/Catherine-Destivelle-L-Alpinisme-tu-connai... ) but don't know if there's an English version available.

Not mountains but "The Worst Journey in the World" is quite eye opening for a youngster.

I also liked the "The White Spider" (lots of tragic endings and the story of Toni Kurz staying with me for a long time) but it depends on what sort of 10 year old you have!

Lynn has a couple in her collection:

Fantastic Female Adventurers by Lilley Dyu

Scratch & Co The Great Cat Expedition by Molly Lefebure (drawings by Wainright)

... and on her 'yet to buy' list:

The Magic Meadow by Ingrid & Edward D'Aulaire

The Fell Farm series (4 books) by Marjorie Lloyd

Heidi by Johanna Spyri

Tintin in Tibet.

Child entered accounts of real adventures, for example Michel McCurdy's Trapped by the Ice - an account of Shackleton's famous rescue endeavour.

In a year or two, the whole of the Swallows and Amazons oeuvre. A bit much for a ten year old, but not far off, and their memory remains with me as the essence of adventure.

Anything else that gives your grandchild a sense of adventure unbound. For me at that age that included books about Vikings and their voyages, especially the novels of Henry Treece.

You could look at Vertebrate Publishing Children's section - Matt Dickinson's Everest Files series for example.

Pretty sure I read the whole of the Swallows and Amazon collection when I was still at primary school. Inspirational for a 10 or 11 year old. At 12 or 13, I had John Hunt's The ascent of Everest as a set book in what is now Year 8. Only 10 years after the event mind. Set me off dreaming about mountaineering.
