Long walk/run recommendations

I'm after a few more things to train for and to get me motivated.  The past 2yrs or so have included:

Spine Challenger, Spine Sprint, Gritstone Trail, Sandstone Trail, Bullock Smithy, Y3P, Welsh 3000, Derwent Watershed.

Any recommendations for things of a simar nature?  I live in the Peak and so Peak/Wales/Lakes is easiest.  Scotland is amazing but too far for day trips so that rules it out.

Ideally looking at c50-150km...ish.  Routes that can be done in a day/wknd.  Bob Graham and Paddy Buckley in 24hrs are a touch too ambitious for my current level of fitness... I'm more fast hiking with some very slow jogging thrown in!

Happy to look at paid for events as well.  All suggestions welcome, I just need some motivation - thanks!

In the Lakes:

Cumbrian traverse.
Abraham’s tearoom round.
Old county tops.

Amongst others, of course!

I’ve not done it but Billy Bland walked the Bob Graham in 24 hours to prove that it could be done. Just some food for thought haha.

Dark Peak 15 Trigs. I think it’s about 85Km?

That's definitely along the right lines... and I live in Hayfield so convient as well - thanks!  Only downside is from a brief glance the route looks very similar to the Derwent Watershed... def worth some more research though!

Mixed emotions about you telling me that... I had ruled it out as too hard, maybe I'll have to do some more homework!  Thanks

McWilliams rounds in the Cheviots. There's a short (30miles) medium (longer than short) and long (longer than medium!)

It'll definitely be less busy than the peak! If you give me a shout I'll happily come out and pace a section or so!

Run Walk Crawl in South Wales do some big days out

In reply to maybe_si:

I've not done much that big in England/Wales... Scotland is clearly miles better for scale and adventure. Still...

Lakes 3000-ers (plus some obvious extras)? https://www.ukhillwalking.com/articles/destinations/the_big_routes_lakeland...

Just did Dartmoor North-South a few days ago too, which was pretty much bang on 50k; if you're willing to travel that far it's a cracking day out, and a lot wilder than you might assume. Expect I'll write something on it shortly

Get the train to Dore and run home? Loads of creative routes possible there, with as much distance as you want.

I wouldn't base your decision on BB having walked it, he said he was more busted after walking it than when he broke the record!

Too far for a day trip, but the Dartmoor High ground 50mile race route is a fun challenge.  Alas Covid and bad weather have killed off the even for now, I so hope it returns, the route is still there though and a serious challenge to those prepared to go for it.

I have nothing to do with the organisation btw, just a simple jogger who enjoys Dartmoor, whatever the weather

The Hadrian's Wall Path in a day! Its 85 miles so should be ok in under 24 hrs, plus its a kind of coast to coast. Train station in Carlisle & Newcastle ( Wallsend via the metro)

I did a Bob Graham a few years ago with very little training (3 weeks!) and got round in 22hrs 13mins so with what you have done i'd say defo go for it, its not too bad

Interesting what you say about the BG....  I'll do some research - thanks!

In reply to maybe_si:

Bradfield boundary worth a look (unless it's too similar to the derwent watershed?)

https://ldwa.org.uk/ldp/members/show_path.php?path_name=Bradfield+Boundary+...

The dark peak club run it on boxing day I think- and try for under 12 hours

Be a bit wary of stories about people doing BGs and such like on minimal training, they're often not quite what they appear!

However, it is probably a lot more doable than you might first think.

What's that route?

Not Peak, but fairly local. Mary Towneley Loop and Calderdale Way are both lovely routes (with some overlap). MTL is 75km, Calderdale is 80.

I’ve done the MTL as a solo ultra run. I’ve done all of the Calderdale, but only in sections.

It's a pretty interesting route from Harry Hut and back to Sheffield. A fair bit of rough ground. I'd definitely need to recce from the Pennine Way down from Higher Shelf Stones pretty much all the way to the end!

Eclectic but might be just the thing you're looking for. I've just done the last section of the full length of the River Dove, from Dove Head (we took in Axe Edge as well to get the watershed) right down to where the Dove joins the Trent. Nice variety of landscapes over the distance.

It's been a good little project. No pressure to get it done, no rules, pretty obvious footpaths suitable for the full length of it, some good memories of different times and seasons. It would make a lovely two-parter (probably a bit far for me, but not for you.)

If you want to stick to something shorter and more scenic (my next project ?!) the Churnet looks hard to argue with - if you don't fancy the rural/agricultural bit of the Dove from Rocester to Burton, well, it cuts that out nicely !

Go well,

Y

Not showing on the Freedom Racing site. Found a report here that shows the 50mile route.

https://ultrarunningcommunity.com/13-report/1201-dartmoor-highground-50-rep...

Alas I didn't get to run it after training for it in 2020, it was cancelled due to Covid like so many events.  I have run the Marathon route, so have a gpx file for that if any one is interested.

Re my Dartmoor suggestion, here's the route I walked last week: https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=1387

Computer says 47km, not 50. But it felt like more.
