Earlier thread on this subject is archived so i couldn't comment. But now that I have finally published my first novel (The Dark Heart) on Amazon I can say I have published a book.
When I first started writing it in 2018 I had very little idea of what I was letting myself in for and it has been a facinating process (not to mention a steep learning curve).
I don't expect to make much from it but that was never the driver. I was interested in the creative process and while I want people to enjoy it I don't think it is necessarily commercial enough. In a way i see it as the difference between artwork I do for myself and artwork I do for a living. So yes it is a "vanity" publishing (looked into various ways of doing it and Amazon seemed by far the easiest and least expensive). The next one I'll submit to a publisher.
