Helllllo!

https://photos.app.goo.gl/VToewnJBMm9kRPMq9

old metolius bouldering mat that has multiple tares - some bigger than others (see picture with a Pringles tube as a measurer)and there is a broken strap attachment thing.  the fabric is like a stretchy thin thing.

My thinking at the moment is to use an old broken pair of jeans and fabric glue/superglue to cover the cuts...Is this a silly idea? What adhesive is best? anyone tried anything like this before?

Any thoughts, comments or encouragements?

In reply to Removed UserBoi Bangor: Proper, reinforced duct tape will do the job better than that

If you want to use old jeans then I'd use iron on glue webbing.

But make sure you use a damp tea towel on top to make some steam with the iron.

Can you sew at all?  Even untidy sewing will help it stay together and you won't see the stitches underneath the patches.

Make a sort of criss cross ladder like this. https://opimedia.azureedge.net/-/media/images/grt/editorial/articles/magazi...

I have to say (at the risk of sounding like a nagging mum, sorry) if the cover is that bad, is there any life left in the foam?

Call me a pessimist, but I suspect anything you stick to it will be peeling right off again sooner than later.  I don't think you'll manage a lasting repair that doesn't involve some sewing.

And denim does sound like a bad idea tbh, you probably want something waterproof and harder wearing than that. Maybe something like this: https://www.pennineoutdoor.co.uk/fabrics/Waterproof-Fabrics-MEDIUM-AND-HEAV...

Could you cannibalise a broken camping chair, a rucksack or something?  If you keep your eyes open perhaps the Cosmic Supply Company will deliver something suitable to a skip near you.

If sewing means paying someone else to do it for you, I guess the question is how much life is left in the foam and is it worth it?  Assuming the foam is still good maybe you could try advertising on here to see if anyone has the same model with knackered foam and a decent cover that they'll sell you cheap.  Never know your luck.

Thanks for all the replyssss!

I think ill keep an eye out for some waterproof-ish fabric and use a lot of glue and attempt some sowing. i've ordered free samples of a bunch of materials from different websites (such as https://www.love-your-home.co.uk/fabricsamples ) for free(inc. postage) using a temp email.

ill keep you updated!

My suggestion would be sail repair tape.

Windsurfers use this to repair their mylar sails when they blow out.

e.g.

No direct experience so do some research but it's got to beat your usual gorilla tape etc.

This. With generous margins around the tears, both sides of the fabric (the inside taking most of the stress).

Check out a marine supply store, they have repair stuff climbers seem to have never heard of that would revolutionize gear if they did, just quietly.

Not meaning to be snarky here, but you would certainly hope so at over 10x the price!
(Your link: £9.95 for 1.5m  'Gorilla' tape at Screwfix: £6.71 for 11m)

Speaking of sails though, that reminds me..

I see the OP's profile says (s)he's in Bangor.
I don't know whether they'd be interested or what they might charge, but there's a small business not far from Holyhead run by lovely people who might be able to help:

That’s a good suggestion to take it to a sail repair place!
