Italy hiking - within 2-3 hrs of Courmayeur

Hi all

We're looking for inspiration for a base to do some hiking this weekend.  We love Italy and would like to go somewhere around the Aosta valley kind of way (say up to 2-3 hrs from Courmayeur).  We would like to base ourselves in one place and do day trips from there rather than going hut to hut or valley to valley.  Somewhere with decent Italian food and some nearby bouldering and/or sport would be perfect.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance

Either base yourself in Cogne, Gressoney or Alagna.
loads of walking below the glacier level in either of these.

Great food, wine, along with solitude especially in the Valsesia valley.

Swiss topo maps on line cover Alagna Gressoney so give you some idea of the walking available.

Valgrisenche is a beautiful, quiet valley, with good climbing and nice walks up to huts. Otherwise, Champoluc/Val d'ayas is lovely; gressoney and cogne have been mentioned and also good. (Alagna is a long drive and not in Valle d'Aosta)

I'm not sure when you are going, but if you are there whilst the lifts are still open, that might be worth factoring in to your choice as it greatly increases your walking options.

Many thanks to both of you.  I think we're going to head to Cogne.

All the best
