Opened the front door this morning to find a Fox (I hope) has chewed up and taken a shit on my speed cross 4s so they’ve gone straight in the bin.

The Salomons did me well but it’s a Good opportunity to try something new I reckon.

Looking for something for slow high mileage. Got the beacons ultra in October (50km, my first ultra) so something with decent lugs.

I run with a stability shoe on road.

Massive Bonus points if they’re in the sales too!

 Cheers

Hoka Speedgoat 4 or Hoka Challenger ATR5

I'd look at hoka, say the speedgoats, but they take some getting used to. and you'd need to know if the wide fitting ones were needed.

But it really depends what fits and what works for you.

How do hoka trail shoes compare with their road shoes? I had a pair of arahi 3s and they’re the only running shoe I’ve tried that give me blisters

In reply to BattyMilk:They're too soft for me to use as my only shoe,,  I've had Hoka for on and off road.  Salomon Sense Ride .

You need to go to a shop

Yes- shopping trip is a very good idea.
I have sense ride 3 and Speedcross 5. The former can be a bit sloppy in soft mud.

In reply to BattyMilk:

Used Speedcross 4 from launch and went through a couple of pairs. The soles always wore fine but they would split on the forefoot. Same with the Sense Ride's I wore for dry and on/off road runs.

Moved onto the 5 and they crucified my Achilles. I sold them after two runs. Not prepared to mess around and not enjoy my running.

I planned on switching to Saucony for the road, Hoka Challenger ATR for dry trails and Hoka Speedgoat for mud.

The spring was so dry I used my Saucony Triumph for every run. Just retired them after 1200km since the end of March with at least 50% of that off road.

Now switched to the Hoka Challenger ATR for on/off road. They are comfortable but I am already concerned about durability. The sole only uses hard rubber on the heel and forefoot. The middle is soft and squishy which means that rocks, gravel, tree roots etc scuff and rip it up. I expect to get no more than 400-500km out of them.

The Speedgoat has only done 200k but always in lousy conditions and they have been great.

Given the performance of the Saucony's I have just purchased a pair of Hurricanes for long and recovery road runs. They feel very plush and beautifully made.

When the Challengers give up I will have a look to see what suits from Saucony.

Inov8 Terraultra G 270 worth a look. Zero drop so may not be for you.

Salomon Ultra Pro perhaps?

Surprised there's not been a suggestion for Altra Lone Peak, Timp or Olympus, plus new season out so there are bargains on previous models.  Also the Hoka ATR which has less ride height than Speedgoat.  Also Inov-8 Trail Ultra.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. Found a bargain on a pair of Salomon ultra pros in my size at wiggle so going to give them a try.

cheers

Hoka Torrent are worth a look, I've been surprised with mine.

In reply to greg_may_:

I've seen reviews of the new Torrent 2 saying it is much improved in the upper - all 3 of the reviews implied that the upper on the original was a bit "sloppy" and you couldn't get a decent lockdown, but this has been resolved. Think the midsole and outsole are more or less unchanged.
Saying that, I have seen the Torrent 1 at quite reduced prices..............
It's one that's on my radar when I need a new pair of trail shoes
