Interesting this pops up. I was reading a post from PHdesigns who do the top end ultralight down suits and they have stitched a pocket on the inside wrist to put hand warmers in. The idea is that if the blood flowing to the hands is heated then it reduces the chances of frostbite.
To an extent the same idea is used in numerous gloves. The outside of palm (no clue of the anatomical part, sorry) has a pocket for chemical heaters. So If heat is placed there, less need for insulation on the fingers.
