Seeds in your socks when wearing shorts

Barley heads are by far the worst and have the ability to burrow deep in through thick walking socks, even through the boot insole and then back into your skin, as I was reminded to my discomfort after following foot paths through fields of cereal crops yesterday. They are barbed like arrows and almost impossible to pull out backwards without making a mess of the sock. Any recommendations for ankle gaiters that have a good tight fit around your ankles?

Id suggest running ones such as the Inov8 all terrain gaiter - it comes with a rubber loop to fit most shoes, not sure about walking boots though.

Ive used the previous model to this for quite some time and they are pretty tough.

The Alpkit equivalent look a bit larger and more likely to fit boots. Just ordered a pair.

They look rather uncomfy without long bottoms on?

Stop tous are what you need. Sometimes just called short gaiters. They're a bit simpler and more robust than the specialist running gaiters, and cheaper.

Thanks! Any idea where you can get them?

I introduced a non-mountain mate to the hills and he classically  referred to them as 'spats'. Still raises a smile.

Aiguille Alpine do them, and I think Trekmates do a pair called the Grasmere gator.

I use dirty girl gaiters in the summer https://dirtygirlgaiters.com

They keep seeds and grit out and aren't too hot.

In the winter I use Raidlight ones having gone through two Inov8 sets of gaiters due to problems with the under straps

The worst case of this I read was of a woman who got a ‘seed’ in her leg. She scratched it and it went further in to her leg. After a while she forgot about it until she developed a chest infection. In a plug of mucus that she coughed up was a pink flower!

Ill try and find the link.

My partner's just got a pair, and they are softer than they look!

Try searching"short ankle gaiters" on fleabay. There's a seller in Wigan does them for a £tenner.  UK made, great quality and one of the best tings I've bought for hillwalking.
