Dear All,

Please can you recommend a decent crag on Skye, preferably gabbro, preferably with an easy walk in and preferably with a decent spread of routes in the lower grades?

Many thanks,

Dave

The Sonamara area, South of the Steps, at Neist Point, has an extremely easy walk in and plenty below VS - but it's not gabbro. I can't think of any gabbro with an easy walk-in, apart from some of the bouldering close to Glenbrittle campsite.

Suidhe Biorach near Elgol, not gabbro but sound rock, certainly on the easier routes such as Fertility Right, Jamie Jampot, Hairy Mary etc.

great crag, but an abseil approach - which may or may not be excluded by "easy walk in"

Suisinish slab. Longish walk in, but easy.

Sron na Ciche is an easy walk  - if about an hour

(Definitely gabbro!)

Yes, Sron na Ciche ticks all the boxes. None of the crags have very short approach walks - such is the nature of these gabbro mountains. If the walk-ins are too much effort, don't bother to go all the way to Skye! Sron na Ciche is one of the best crags in Britain for huge long routes in the lower grades. Probably the second main reason (after the traverse of the Cuillin Ridge) why most climbers drive all the way up there.

Thanks All for the recommendations. Sron na Ciche could work but I was just after an easy half day cragging ahead of a traverse attempt. It doesn't really sound like that exists without going to the sea cliff venues.

Anyone been here:  Nead na h-Iolaire#overview

it doesn't look very good...

No I wouldn't recommend it. And the walk takes longer than you expect. You could try the outcrops above the landing stage at Coruisk. See the guide for details. Makes for a lovely day out - boat trip - Coruisk - very short walk - climb!
