Gloves for winter running

Was out running in the northern Pennines this weekend and both days there was a really stiff cold wind blowing. I was ok with most of my kit, but, tbh, my fingers got really cold.  Was using a pair of gloves from Up and Running, which also have a sort of fold over goretex mitten section that goes over the ends of the fingers. Anyway, whatever they were, fingers were freezing, defo bad windchill involved.

Any suggestions for warm gloves, perhaps waterproof as well, and if possible, still able to use a touchscreen?

Thank you.

If you suffer from cold digits, then mittens are your friend, rather than gloves. Keeping your fingers together reaps the greatest warmth rewards

Too many options to mention, but if you opt for mitts, make sure you can take them on and off quickly, as this helps legislate for the downside of minimised dexterity.

Combining mitts with disposable hand warmers is another good tip when it’s really cold.

FWIW, I think the mitten-over-glove solutions are a nonsense.

I’m a long term raynauds sufferer, so my advice is based on years of trying to solve the pain!

You’ll get lots of other good advice on here I’m sure.

Good luck.

Yeah I use handwarmers. In the US it's typically colder but dryer than the UK so I like a leather, fleece lined work glove type thing. However I also use a thinner specialised running glove, that can be used with a screen, and then a windproof fleecer glove (windstopper?) over that.

Like Plyometrics I'm a raynauds sufferer so have various combinations but layering works well. However handwarmers are a game changer.

Buffalo mitts. Cheap, windproof, pile lined, lightweight.

I find arm warmers help, if you're not using those (or long sleeves) already, particularly over the forearms.

And if ones you like don't work with touchscreens, try the trick - picked up from these very pages - of using your nose

Tried that trick on top of helvellyn on Saturday. I just ended up with snot all over my screen!

I also suffer with cold hands. Neoprene gloves do not work at all for me, what does work are thin inner gloves (with touch screen tips) then depending on how cold it is, either inov-8 mitts or my winter mountaineering OR mitts over the top. On runs too cold for mitt removal I too use my nose!

I also use hand warmers and if i stop for anything i immediately add a layer on the hands: not letting them get cold in the first place is definitely the way forward!

I've used these for really cold weather winter runs: https://www.mountain-equipment.co.uk/mountain-glove

They're basically a hill walking glove but not too heavy, cheap and plenty warm. They're easy to put on and off and the cuff easily accommodates a chunky GPS watch. Not touch screen compatible though.

I've been using Inov8 polartec alpha mitts this winter and they have been fantastic - warm but breathable. Also dry really quickly, and are light and compact.

Thanks to everyone for those replies.

Lots for me to go and investigate and hopefully get the solution, just in time for the warmer weather!

Run faster!

But more seriously are you keeping your core warm and wearing long sleeved tops etc. I see runners with t-shirts and gloves on sometimes but the blood has to go through the exposed arm before it gets to the hands.

I'm a short sleeves but gloves runner. This is mainly because I'm overweight so I start sweating very quickly, but I have terrible circulation in my hands, so they stay cold most of the time.

I use fleece gloves as they're warm enough, but if it's raining they don't get too saturated and dry out quickly.

Buffalo Mitts for proper grim.

When conditions less brutal:

https://www.sealskinz.com/gloves/stretch-fleece-nano-gloves-black.htm these for it just being cold.

Waterproof. Keep the wind off. Can use a touch screen (not that I ever do!), and dexterity maintained.

On which point - the Powerstretch wrist warmers several brands make are good for the hand/arm junction where lots of heat loss can occur. Often use those rather than gloves.

What's worked for me this season is to have thin liner gloves and a warm insulated overmitten, with an opening in the palm to free the fingers and thumbs if it gets too warm.

With regular mittens or gloves I find it harder to maintain a comfortable temperature, and end up sweating too much, for it later to get too cold.

It's also nice if the gloves don't get soaking wet when touching snow, e.g. if there's a bit of scrambling involved, or I slip. My mittens are a bit more resistant to that.

I frequently run with a running backpack, mainly to carry the gloves and a spare jacket, but also to be used to running with one for when I run hill races.

I think the goretex fold over mitten is mainly of use against rain/snow.

Can you give me a manufacturer of these, or a link? When I search, just seems to come up with neoprene options for windsurfing etc.

Thank you.

Hi,

I bought them a few years back in Italy, and have no idea what the brand is!
However, I see Salomon do something similar called: XA WARM OVERMITTEN

Also dynafit do BORAX PRIMALOFT® MITTEN.

Hopefully one of those works for you, or helps you find something suitable.

Regards
