Are these sort of things any good?

https://www.wexphotovideo.com/storm-jacket-slr-medium-black-1017351/?mkwid=...

My camera isn't "weather proofed" (Cannon Eos 77d) but i'm going to costa rica and anticipate a fair amount of rain, mist, dust etc and chances of being splashed whale watching. and want to do better than hiding it in a dry bag. I'll have a range of lenses with me s something like this would be quite practical

Any recommendations welcomed.

I survived quite well with big freezer bags. I made a hole in one corner just big enough to push the tip of my camera lens through.

Not sure youd be allowed to travel with a Cannon!

Have you considered these cheaper alternatives?

Possibly, but I've not used them so can't say for sure.

I have a Ewa Marine bag, which is excellent, and I've also used a ThinkTank Hydrophobia but it's these Op Tech covers that I take when I might have a need to keep my camera dry but I may not have to - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Op-Tech-Rainsleeve-Twin-Pack/dp/B000PTFDYO. I've found they're very effective (even when travelling on a boat with spray bouncing around) so I'd suggest don't be put off by the price. I'd just advise to be sensible with them as they're not bulletproof. I use a thick elastic band as well as the cord cinch.

I made one out of the sleeve of an old light-weight waterproof plus some shock-cord salvaged from the same jacket. The pit zip provides the hole I put my hand through. Took a bit of working out to make it but very satisfying, cheap, and looks OK.

Well after looking briefly, i'm now being inundated with all sorts of weird and wonderful designs in ads!

I'll have a look around and go for something more reasonably priced

I use something similar with my 7d and 17-40 F4L. It does a good job of protecting the camera in quite heavy rain, though the camera and lens are pretty well weather proofed.

I have used both home made bag and off the shelf versions and they both work well. First of all, all waterproof kit makes your camera a pain to use. Home made kit tends to be an absolute faff to put on so only really works well if it’s put on the camera in the hotel first anticipating rain, the benefits are that you can completely customise it to your own needs, it’s also very cheap. Off the shelf kits are much easier to whip on or off, but to get versions that are user friendly means going up the price range, they tend to be much more robust.

We now use the think tank hydrophobia. The one in the link below fits my Cannon 5D mk IV with an 1.4 extender and 100-400mm fitted( with shade at max extension) as well as my smaller lenses and 70D. It’s never failed me in driving rain, blizzards, and sand I get when doing wildlife photography. The extra eyepiece needed can be bought for a fraction of the price if you hunt out generic brands.

Yeah they’re pretty good, not sure about that particular brand. However, I shoot football most weekends, often in the rain and whilst my colleague on the opposition newspaper swears by these and they never seems to let him down, my gear - 7dii with 70-200 2.8 - so reasonably bulky - seems to survive just as well in a carrier bag, though it’s a bit more faff.
