Sat at home on Christmas eve reading though the depths of ukc forums I see lots of talk of punters and wads. But what actually makes a punter a punter and when if ever do they ascend to wad-dom?

Is there anything in between the wad and the punter? And where does the lesser spotted bumbly come into the whole equation?

Merry Christmas one and all!

Think you're ready for the promotion to wad status eh, Dino?

Punter = your own grade minus 2 grades

Bumbly = your own grade minus 4 grades

Wad = your own grade plus 4 grades

Or something

I've said this before on this topic, but it's all about context. At Stanage I'm a wad because I'm soloing everyone's hardest leads. At Malham I'm a punter because I'm getting in the way by projecting the warm-up.

As for between the punter and the wad, well at the lower end of mediocrity is the bumbly (basically a competent punter) and at the upper end is the plodder, who seems to do pretty much everything the wad does (as in training, doing all disciplines, etc) except climbing hard routes.

I nearly added an edit to say the very same

Extreme Bumbly = your own grade minus 4 grades would be less than zero.

Extreme Wad = nobody's ever climbed your own grade plus 4 grades.
