I have a bright green rucksack which I want to dye black (long story).

Does anyone have any experience doing this, or similar? It looks like I would need to boil it in dye rather than using cold water?

Is it cotton or nylon or polyester?

I don't think it's likely to work unless it's an old fashioned cotton one. 

Synthetic fabric won't take the colour easily if at all.

There's a thread on backpacking light.com about this. Some very successful outcomes with nylon packs. Not so with polyester.

to be honest, even if it ends patchy you've got a unique bit of gear that will probably grow on you

Go mad with a pack of Sharpies.

It's definitely nylon

The one I linked to above should work well on nylon.  Have you got a big enough old saucepan?!
