I'm Looking into getting an ultra light tent set up for bike packing / climbing trips. I've got a outdoor research bivi but looking for something a bit bigger for longer trips away I can do 2/3 nights in the bivi before it gets annoying.

Looking for something that has space for 2, Ideally under 1kg, packs down small.

The two in contention are

Nemo hornet 2p or MSR carbon reflex 2p

Any other suggestions welcome and any advice would be appreciated thanks

Check ou Telemark 2 ULW. It weighs about 900g.

I have a tarp tent scarp 1 for sale if you're interested?

I borrowed one of these recently for a mountain marathon and was very impressed with it. Plenty of room for two of us, even with rucksacks as well (though admittedly that's two quite short women - YMMV if you're taller than 5'3").

Nemo Hornet or Big Agnes Fly Creek would be my main bets.

I had one, absolutely excellent and surprisingly roomy for a couple. Had an unfortunate accident, entirely my fault, snapped the pole which totally destroyed the fly. Nordisk said a replacement fly was not available separately. Hugely disappointing. Will I buy another one? Probably.

Beware the ultralight groundsheet!

See the discussion from a little while back about tyvek.

Two tradeoffs to look out for with ultralight tents are the hydrostatic head of the fly and groundsheet and the life-expectancy of the fly. I've not got personal bad experiences to back this up or anything, but I'd be nervous using a tent with 1000mm hydrostatic head on the groundsheet and fly in standard British conditions where the campsite can unexpectedly turn into a lake overnight, similarly a 10 or 15 Denier flysheet is likely to degrade relatively quickly if you regularly pitch it in a campsite on a climbing trip and then leave it up in the sun all day.

We ended up going a bit heavier on weight (1.7kg) and got a Lightwave G15 Raid, which seems good from the two nights we've spent in it so far...

Interesting, neither are big brands in the UK market, I assume this is via your more "continental" outlook and are brands you stock/will stock?

The Nemo looks a bit shy on the fly front for me but I like the look of the Big Agnes, Good "livable" space. Do the high vertical sides stand up to a battering do you know?

TN Laser Comp is what I use for lightweight trips, great little tent, but as above is always use a homemade footprint, just a bit of plastic tarp from B&Q

Yeah although I must say people are mad for them, especially the Big Agnes. Personally I prefer the Nemo as it's more stable when the wind picks up IMO - although it depends how high up you're going. My colleague has the Flycreek and really rates it for three season use, he's done stuff like the PCT with it but not so much higher mountain use. Had a chat with Nemo at Outdoor this year and they seem really psyched to push more into the UK market so watch this space I guess...

Funny, I know Hendrik who did the following review isn't very big, and he's very much of the view that Nordisk are rather taking the p!ss calling it a 2 person tent! https://hikinginfinland.com/2018/02/nordisk-lofoten-2ulw.html

Have you seen https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/camping-and-hiking/backpacking-tent/... ? I had a Hubba and it seemed pretty tough, although OGL call the design weak, but their review does really make you question the carbon poles!

In reply to Subseaclimber:

Had the same dilemma for the same reasons and went for the msr freelite 2 (similar to the C Reflex apart from carbon poles and a thinner fly). The C Reflex doesn't have any zips on the fly, use velcro.

Size wise its just about big enough for 2 (close friends)

Ground sheet is paper thin tho so I got mine with the footprint.

Buy from EMS for the best price.

That's the Lofoten though - not the Telemark which is more like a Laser Comp in size and layout. The Lofoten really is very snug for two people (it does help when the other person is your gf though!) As he says in the review its really a specialised mountain marathon tent for the seriously committed.

Apologies, yeah mixed the models up. So the Telemark has decent space in it for two does it?

I have a Big Agnes Seedhouse - has survived well so far (other than stupidity damage), but then again I haven't used it much in challenging conditions either. Fantastic tent, wouldn't hesitate to consider buying another from them.

You might want to take a look at the Copper Spur as well as the Fly Creek.

Just back from  a short trip in the Pyrénées. Used my ever faithful Ultimate Tramp 1 ( bought 1980 !).

Fantastic tent, never let me down ! Anyway, looking at the  'net  they still show up here and there- Ebay, car-boot sales  etc-for as little as a fiver !

Of course, if it's got to be shiny and new then forget it, but how many modern, light-weight tents will still be usable in 38 years ?

Check out he trekkertent Stealth range. I have a 1.5 and it is superb. Lightyears ahead of the TN Laser it replaced on pretty much every measure.

Another vote for Trekkertent, I have the Phreeranger a one man tent but really well made.

Another vote for the Telemark2 ULW.  Though for general camping I'd probably plumb for the LW and stronger poles.ff

I've used for a couple of MMs now and v.happy with it.  Plenty of room for 2 we felt and I managed to sit in the porch and cook at last year's OMM without getting into the tent, though can't say it was comfortable!

Cheers!

Stu

I held one in-store once. Absolutely mindblowing, like a small bottle of water!

Check out the Duomid from Mountain Laurel designs and similar from Locus designs.

Both are pyramid tents supported by walking poles or pole and very lightweight. MLD are based in the USA and Locus in Japan. I imported my Duomid from MLD they are very helpful. Worth a look.

Have a look at the Big Agnes options as well. I love the Seedhouse SL 2.  It's 1.2kg but a really decent space, genuinely liveable.

I'll throw in a shout for the Mountain Hardwear Ghost. One of the UK online climbing shops was running a promo on this last week. I do find condensation a bit of an issue with it though.
