I walked past a couple of double decker buses packed with school children going on an end of term outing. What a chattering row! They make football fans in a pub watching the semi final sound quiet and restrained in comparison

Now imagine being a teacher subjected to that everyday!

I've often wondered what the readings would be if it was measured with a sound meter. It is amazing how loud they can be.

Mind you Friday nights in the pub are often the same.

Maybe Special Forces should employ local primary schools to break candidates doing interrogation in Selection.......?

You should try being in my open office with several people who seem to think volume makes them seem more important/intelligent than they are, my head is mashed.

That's their main skill set. Hasn't changed since I was at school.

If the boys are quiet, beware - they probably have porn. If the girls are quiet then send for help...

I have a young daughter who (along with her friends) seem to think that it's acceptable to run around shrieking in a high pitch voice at high volume. It wouldn't be so bad if it were a lower pitch, but it's excruciating!

I used to get into secondary school in first year and wonder at how noisy and lively my classmates managed to be at just gone 9 am.  My form teacher would ask me if I was alright, and I was, I was just still waking up. 

All that energy. I long for the days when it used to seem more natural to run than to walk when I needed to get somewhere. 

We used to shut the Num Num children up with Duck Tape

I'm only 38, but a family friend in his early 70's never sits still, being always on the go doing something DIY or practical, or out on a walk, he's always busy doing 'something' rather than nothing, and it's an example I try and follow. I think he doesn't like the feeling which goes with inactivity, but he's one of the handful of people that age I know who is still slim and active. Why ever he's like that, it seems like a helpful thing.

They might be excited at the thought of a school trip. It's what you'd expect isn't it. Something is wrong if they have to be quiet. Children are meant to be noisy as we were once remember.

Kids always try to out shout each other. There's probably a mathematical formula for it: something like  three children are twice as noisy as two, four children are twice as noisy as three, and on it goes  until a bus load are more noisy than a jumbo jet.

I'm sure Terry Pratchett had some wise observation about the sound of children playing being charming, until you could actually hear the words...

Have they been released yet? 

Well, to shut them up properly we normally wound their whole heads up with several layers of tape and poked a couple of holes through with a pencil for their nostrils. Folk always said they looked a lot better like that, and they were right, so normally we left it on for as long as possible

Which was their choice of profession - it’s not like it should be a shock to the “poor teachers” is it? 

What other profession moans about their job as much as teachers?
