Best outdoor mens pants (and I mean pants!)

Having always used lycra compression shorts - Under Armour, Skins e.t.c., these are great for wicking sweat, but get sticky when it's hot and are grim for more than a day or two in a row. Tried the cheap decathlon sports boxers but they ride up.

Tried pure merino wool, these are great for about 3 minutes until they lose their shape and, if you'll excuse the plain-ness, your tackle falls out of one leg opening. Then they start chafing. Similar to a shite merino long-sleeve i had that was replaced by an EXCELLENT Arc'teryx merino baselayer (which is the nuts, shame I can't put them in it).

Has anyone discovered the perfect cool-weather underwear?

Is it primino? merino+? lifa warm? Arc Satoro AR's?

If you wear normal cotton boxers please get out of the thread you make me uncomfortable.

Supernatural- merino boxers. Brilliant

Agree, also cheap from SportPursuit.

Macpac merino grundies fall apart quickly.

I note arc'teryx do make some polyester solomons too, but haven't tried them.

I like Patagonia Capilene Briefs.

Have also used Rab MeCo boxers a lot, but don’t find them as supportive.

Rab MeCo start off well, and then quite literally burrow their way into you undercarriage in a  most uncomfortable manner. Need manually removing from their chosen path every 200m. I have never experienced this before or since with any other pair. Weird.

Lowe Alpine Dryflo boxers have served me well for a number of years. I had some Paramo boxers, but the elastic wasn't up to much and they spent most the day halfway down your bum.

I wear a kilt and go commando, it helps dissuade my belayer from looking up and compromising their onsight attempt.  Hope that makes you feel more at ease.

If your tackle is falling out the bottom of your pants, you should consider a career in porn. If it's falling out of your underpants on the other hand, just get better fitted cotton ones.

+1 on this. I've used a couple of pairs extensively for a lot of years now and they are still in great nick.

I've used more miles ones (which aren't roomy enough for your balls) and decathlon ones which seem a bit flimsy. The Marks ones are outlasting and outperforming both despite much more wear.

In reply to mbh:

Totally agree.. M&S Autograph range is top notch. I've used them for years. Sensible price, comfortable, durable.

No need to pay silly money for underwear.

I use Icebreaker Merino for long days. My oldest pair are approx 5 y.o. and get worn once, maybe twice a month. Never lost shape. Merino is very much about quality and weight is important also. I don't think (from personal experience) anything under 200 weight would be much use. Could be wrong. Icebreaker used to do 150 weight, but discontinued them due to wear/snagging issues.

Ps. No nad or knob exposure issues either. And I'm huge )

To the inevitable anti-snobs that arrived: I like insulating my cock in a way that is supportive, chafe-free, clears sweat and dries quickly. And I'm worth it.

If you like wallowing in a soggy mess of your own ballsweat, only to stop and find you are now freezing cold - or, sin of sins to wake up at 0400 in an alpine hut to find the boxer-shaped tea-towel you were wearing and now have to put back on is still a Baltic wet stinking rag (and nobody wants to sit next to you at breakfast), then be my very welcome guest.

Alternatively, if your only interaction with the outdoors is on here trolling threads then I suspect cotton boxers will do just a treat.

Mons Royal hold 'em boxers

Best I've ever used, not too heavy price tag either. Merino and synthetic mix, washable at 40 and hold their shape well. Nice long fit too.

If you want the opinions of people who actually go outside I think you're on the wrong website

I use CK "Intense Power" brief which do the job for me, and for a snugger fit sometimes the CK One Microfibre brief - both dry quickly too.

Have the Icebreaker merino ones and never had any issue with baggyness or any bits falling out. I did get them what I initially thought were smallish as I was between sizes, so maybe that helps? Also, I trust its not the Y-front shaped smaller pair that you are using.

M&S 'active' boxers. A sort of lycra blend.

Cheap, cheerful and very functional.

(and I normally buy high functioning branded kit)

Also work a treat if you live in a van and spend every day in the outdoors... sounds like the problem only arises when the closest you get to the outdoors is a weekend here and there, but you expect to still smell like you do on your normal weekend visit to the shopping mall

I like the Decathlon briefs - not boxers, but a 'speedo' style. Most comfortable undercrackers I've worn, pretty cheap too. I think they're marketed as running briefs.

A little pricey (but not as bad as the big brands) but the Rohan Ultra Silver trunks have been my favourites for years. Used them everywhere from Nigeria to the Arctic Circle and they are amazing. Super soft so no chafing, not-too-long but just long enough and snug so as not to ride up, but with plenty of tackle room.

They use that fancy 'silver-infused' material that's becoming all the rage now, so you can easily get away with wearing 24 hours a day for 3-4 days straight without any hint of smell and they wick brilliantly. I've tried Under Armour, Nike Pro, Uniqlo Airism and am always disappointed. Airisms ride up  always and give a terrible wedgie, wheras the Under Armours and Nike Pros squash and mould my privates like soft clay.

Another vote for Icebreaker merino.  Quick drying, don’t smell, wick well, somehow feel warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s hot.  Quite pricey though.

Muji do undies in some natty colours with a polyester/nylon/elastine/cotton mix that are serviceable and reasonably hardwearing. Low on the sweat and cost factor...

i'd say don't bother with pants.  get a set of x-bionic shorts and go commando.  this has been my solution for running, hiking, and more for about 2 years now.   they wash quickly and are like new.  downside: expensive.

but, if you really need underwear for cool weather, maybe go with ex-officio 'give-n-go?'   these work for me.  but these are probably for hotter rather than cooler weather.

i stay far far away from anything merino which i find to be, well, hot and smelly.  and not just for underwear - for pretty much anything.

helly henson ones are good too - but they smell like i've got a sea otter in my trousers.

Some compression shorts are more compression than others.  I wear Skins A400s for running but I agree those would be uncomfortable for a weekend expedition.  But I also have a pair of Under Armour Supervent Shorts, which have a much lower level of compression, and those are pretty good for avoiding chafe while not feeling like your you-know-whats are being squashed.  They are also quite well ventilated (clue is in the name ).

Briefs are fine for a smaller thigh, slow death for a larger one.

I have a few pairs of the Airism trunks. Once you work out which of their styles and sizes actually fits, they're silky heaven.
