How much do you read for pleasure? I seem to spend a good proportion of my working day reading, but none of it is for pleasure. I would rather read a book over watching tv or listening to the radio, but because I can do other things whilst watching tv or listening to the radio, my reading time tends to be the half hour late in the evening before I am too tired to concentrate. A couple of hours on a weekend is a real luxury. Do you find you have time to read? Do you wish you had more time to read?

About an hour a day.  Getting a kindle revived my reading as it's easy to carry it around and select a book that suits my fancy. I have about five books on the go at the moment.

Almost every day. Mainly I read in bed (unless I'm lucky enough to get distracted) but it can be anything from half an hour before I nod off with some books to 3 hours or more for a real low-brow page-turner. On a cold wet morning I may lie there reading for hours.  And always a dead tree book not a screen

Tend to read for about half an hour before bed every night. I find it helps me switch off and makes getting to sleep easier. Working through the discworld series at the moment. Also a kindle user.

Other than work related reading, I usually read on the train travelling to/from work. Otherwise its a short time at the end of the day, or a bit longer at weekends or if on holiday/travelling for work

Welcome to the club! I used to read for hours on end when still in school and uni, but nowadays I am too tired most evenings to read more than a few pages, so I often instead listen to some music or watch sports on TV before going to bed.

Most of us have the time, some of us waste it on the internet

Once kids in bed, I usually spend an hour , maybe two reading in front of the fire. Having said that, this depends on a few factors. If something good on tv (rare) then that will win. If wife is in and wants to watch something on netflix, I usually join her. This means I probably spend 2 to 3 weekday evenings a week reading in silence for an hour or two. 

This also fluctuates depending on how much I am enjoying the book and will lessen when the light evenings come back and I will spend more time in the garden after 7.30pm

This is me too,  most nights 30 mins or so and my kindle always comes on holiday with me, the next holiday involves a cabin in Shropshire with a hot tub, other than the typical things people do in a hot tub there is nothing like relaxing for half a day with a kindle in a waterproof case and a bit of classical music playing quietly in the background. 

I used to get 90 minutes each way on a train to read everyday which was lovely (but i went through books far too quickly). I drive or ride to work now, and like you tend to have tv on while I do other things in the evening.  so now I probably do 2-3hours a week max unless I'm on holiday

I tend to read a chapter in bed to wind down after the nightly Netflix session. Usually decent modern fiction or something serious but not too heavyweight. Recently I thoroughly enjoyed reading the case histories of the leading criminal barrister of the last century. Currently cheering myself up with an exposition of genocide and crimes against humanity.

learning to drive and the rise of smart phones have ruined my reading for pleasure. in fact, it's a goal for 2018 to read 2 books a month, somethibg I've failed to do.

the most annoying thing is I still buy the bloody books, just don't get around to reading them

I mostly read in the bath. So that's at least once a week!

I'm studying at the moment so spend a lot of every day reading - I find I need to read something non-study related at the end of the day, to settle my brain. I keep a list every year of what I've read and I seem to average around 25 books a year - most of which are consumed during holidays.I'm not reading as much as I once did, mostly because I now have a TV (and a husband to talk to).  My books-to-read pile is generally still a bit excessive, a case of a book equivalent of 'eyes bigger than stomach', but I have a bit of a fear of being stuck for something to read. 

So about 5 minutes then?

20 mins most evenings.

Especially now I've cut back on my UKC addiction...

I sometimes stretch to ten minutes if I'm reading something challenging. 

Seven minutes each way on the train weekdays, and half an hour at lunch.  Then read in bed before the inevitable pressure on my thumb tells me I've nodded off and time to turn the light out.  Perhaps a lie in of 45 minutes one morning one weekend in three.  With young kids the idea of sitting down and reading till I am sated seems like a ridiculous fantasy world - I sometimes fantasise about being on a long-haul flight with nothing else to do!  My reading diet is a mix of climbing/history and sci-fi/fantasy.  Just started 'Ready Player One' which has that marvelous feeling of a book you can't wait to get back to - savouring every word.

I read for pleasure every day, and probably average 1 to 2 hours a day. Mainly in bed in the evening, or if I wake early or during the night.

I love a good book, and will often read in reference to watching TV. 

Also on trains and coaches, or in waiting rooms, and in the loo!

95% of my reading is on a kindle.

Reading is definitely one of life's pleasures.

Q1 - Not really, unless I find something I just can’t put down.
Q2 – Hell yes.
Given a magic lamp, my first wish would be for 7 days between 00:01 and 00.02 on a Sunday night.
That way, I just might be able to get around to the things I want to do.

I generally read a couple of books a week, but then I'm a student.

I love weekend days where it turns out Mrs TC hasn't made plans for us, meaning I can get up, put the kettle on, then come back to bed with a cup of tea and a good book.

That beats reading in the shower.....

They reckon that the average porn story, written or video, is about 12 minutes long and is that length so as to coincide with a 'mans natural behaviour'.
You appear to be two minutes shy of that...

What could possibly distract you from a good book

I'm lucky enough to be retired so I can read pretty much as and when I want. A while ago I completed one of my retirement projects of reading Finnegans Wake - which required a fair few whole days on the sofa! 

Apart from the last week,as I've been busy with the move etc, since I've retired it's been a  book every  2 days.

It's come to the point now where, sick of making Amazon rich via Kindle purchases I'm back to scouring charity shops.

Not much, usually whilst I’m stood at the printer at work. If I could, I would love to. This will have to be a poor second.

Im working in Leeds today, so sat on the train. I had planned to read, but the carriage is too bloody cold to concentrate.

This is one of the reasons why I opt to take public transport to work, rather than by car. Fair enough it adds around 40-50mins to my overall daily commute, but it gives me the time to read, whereas I feel the time in the car is basically wasted. I could use the time to listen to podcasts or audiobooks, but I prefer to do that whilst doing the washing up or whatever.

A good call. You also help our environment. Another benefit of not driving is that you avoid the stress it seems to involve these days.

I mostly get the train to work these days. Cheaper (with a season ticket), less stressful, better for the environment and, of course, more time to relax, have a nap, read, or whatever. (Plus the occasional slightly puerile fit of the giggles on spotting the virgin invader at New Street. )

So, an hour or so curled up with a book on the way home, and half an hour or so before putting the light out at bedtime. Plus the odd occasion when the weather first thing on a Saturday is so 'orrible that the only sensible thing to do is stay curled up under the duvet with a pint of tea and a good book ...

I'm in a plane for about 12 hours every week overall, so plenty of time to read, it's often enough time to read one or two books per week. To be honest if we had internet in plane I'd probably be distracted by work or Netflix instead and would never read ! Although I hate the whole airport nonsense, once in the plane I do very much enjoy having this time for myself with a good book. Mostly philosophy, economics, history and science fiction. Currently reading Identity and Violence by Amartya Sen. Highly recommend.

I don’t!  Average day is leave for work at 8:00, spend all sat reading stuff on the computer, get home maybe around 19:00, have something to eat and help sort the kids out, then train from maybe 21:00 to 22:30.  After all that I can’t be arsed to pick up a book!

Yep - I used to enjoy it before I had as many work & family responsibilities, but there’s only so many hours in the day.
