Edinburgh Young Walkers on Ben A'an. Walking groups are one way to help more young folk to get out, 5 kbA survey in Scotland has found that under 35s have the least access to walking partners and info on where to walk; they are also the age group most put off by safety fears.

I'm sure this is the same in England and Wales and something the BMC should be addressing instead of being obsessed with indoor climbers.

I don't doubt that the findings of this survey are as quoted but the reasons given for making it difficult for young people to get out walking are nonetheless ridiculous.

There is more information on where to go and how to stay safe than there has ever been and it is easier to access than ever. Internet forums make it easier to find partners than it has ever been and in real terms the cost of gear and travel has never been less.

The most telling comment in the whole article is this:

"The poll's findings suggest that a level of basic ignorance among younger people is a major hurdle to more of them going walking."
