I'm on the market for a walking axe for UK use, and am thinking I might go for the Grivel Munro. Does anyone have any opinions on it or experience of owning one?

Hi Andy

I have a blue monro axe, had it over ten years. Found it fine, quite light and ok for walking and grade I & II routes. Used it in the lakes, Scotland and the Alps.

The DMM cirque is also worth looking at, a bit heavier and more cash but more future proof if you want to move onto easy climbs.

Hope that helps Davey-brown@hotmail.co.uk

My progression

1) Grivel Munro, fine for walking

2) Grivel Nepal SA with a slight bend in the shaft, slightly better for self-arrest and for easy winter climbs

3) Climbing Technology Alpin Tour with shorter shaft, because when I really need it - traversing steep slopes - I need it short
