Fantastic niche Cairngorm pun/dad joke there

Glad someone noticed!

It was my favourite part of the (already strong) article. I reckon you should try and sneak one into each and every review, as if writing them isn't already enough work.
In reply to ianstevens:

I like a challenge
In reply to Dan Bailey - UKHillwalking.com:

Dan, if you're game - and the users have requested it - then it would seem rude not to oblige

Where do I need to look? Perhaps I don't know the Cairngorms enough to get it...

Do you do women's gear, any female reviewers?

*points to 50.6% of the population* WE'RE OVER HERE!

In reply to LifeIsAmazing:

Hi,

Yes, sorry, I'm acutely aware how it looks. Believe it or not we struggle for female reviewers, though we are working on that. We do of course publish reviews by women, but it's nowhere near 50.6% I'm afraid (always nice to have an ambitious target).

Though modelled and written about by men, a number of the products in this particular lineup have a women's version too: the Bora AR, the Definition shell, and the Kinetic Plus jacket - In each case this is mentioned in the full reviews to which the Top 10 piece links.

Of the rest, well, the karabiner, helmet, stick, crack gloves and stove clearly aren't gendered so I don't think the gender of the reviewer is relevant in these cases. That leaves the Paramo Enduro (no female version) and the Scarpa Ribelle (I don't know - we've not written the full review yet).

The availability (or lack) of female versions is something we always try to mention in any review.

Back to the important point. The dearth of female reviewers - ditto contributors more generally. Well we're here, and there's no entrance policy except merit... So I guess this is an open invite to get in touch. If you can write well and take good photos, if you know about gear and you use it a lot, and if you happen to be a woman too, then do drop me a line.

We're sorted for male reviewers though. No more middle aged white blokes for now, please

So there is an entrance policy

Policy is probably a bit of a grand name for it

One of those really controversial entrance policies where they already have enough of one thing and want another. Lets say a cafe has 1 chef and 9 waiting staff. You're a specialist waiter/waitress. Clearly, they need chefs, you're not getting a job there - same scenario.

The one thing that really struck me as I looked through all these nice products - the price! I guess this is all top of the line, cutting edge stuff but still, wow...

My crack gloves are 30 quid which while isn't pocket change is what many are happy to spend on a smallish night out. Dan picked the new Pocket Rocket stove which at under 30 quid isn't too much either - yes you can get non-branded Chinese ones off ebay or sold in places like Sports Direct for less (I've got an ebay one and it's great for something so light), but lots of us have 10 or 15 year old Pocket Rocket 1s, so hopefully the new version will last as well.

There's an Alpkit jacket - their top one yes, but half or less than half of similar top jackets from the big name brands. Even the Rab jacket seems quite cheap if you think of it as a waterproof.

The rucksack is bloody expensive though!

In reply to UKC/UKH Gear:

Curious to know how much gear the reviewers have actually bought this year to be able to assemble a 'best of' products. I've bought new axes, a helmet (well, it was a present), and a BD number 6 cam. Probably a few other small things I've forgotten. Only one of those (the helmet) is actually a 2017 product. Is everybody buying considerably more new gear than me? I'm always very sceptic of the neutrality of these sort of articles when there is one product per company.

In reply to Mr. Lee:

Lee, Editor Dan just asked all of us who write reviews what our favourite thing we reviewed this year was. So I chose the thing that I thought was the most interesting product that I have used (and continue to use) this year. I did review a brilliant sleeping bag over last winter, but I actually decided 30 quid crack gloves were a much more realistic Xmas pressie idea for a UK climbing website than a 300 (or 400?!) quid sleeping bag.
In reply to TobyA:

I was interested to see you chose the OR ones over the Ocun ones too, as I've used the latter but not the former - only felt them at a trade show.
 TobyA 13 Dec 2017
In reply to Rob Greenwood - UKClimbing:

Mainly just because they are so small and light when stuffed into a pocket. I would be just as happy using the Ocun ones on a route - they are slightly thicker, which of course will be a help in some cases and a hindrance in others!
