The eight zip wires would pass over the lake near Deergarth How Island, 3 kbA planned zip wire attraction, with eight cables, each over 1km long, passing over Thirlmere, has been rubbished by conservation campaigners, who say it is at odds with the area's National Park status.

The Lake District National Park Authority is consulting on the proposal and this closes on 2nd January so anyone who wants to comment on this development has a short time to do so. As a walker I cannot see how 8 zip wires going over the lake would meet the national park's duties which are to:

Conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage
Promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of national parks by the public

When national parks carry out these purposes they also have the duty to:

Seek to foster the economic and social well-being of local communities within the national parks
