Introducing the Pongoose Climbing Brush

These days, climbers are after more than just a plastic toothbrush to brush their holds. They care about environmentally friendly materials and minimising rock erosion. They demand well thought-out handle and head shapes, funky designs and natural bristles. If you're a climber who wants to buy a serious, well designed brush then read on.

The premium Pongoose climbing brush is created with comfort and ultimate grip in mind. Designed personally by Pongoose Founder, Rob Rendall, it has a beech wood handle with dense boar's hair bristles, making it a high quality, environmentally friendly brush for effective chalk removal. The handle is contoured to fit your hand comfortably; this coupled with the tear-drop shaped head keeps your knuckles out of the way when brushing and helps prevent over-brushing. The pointed tip also brushes even the most unusual shaped holds. The brush comes with a short length of random coloured utility cord so you can clip it to your chalk bag or harness. With the novel Pongoose artwork laser etched into the back of the handle, you'll definitely stand out at the crag or the climbing wall with your Pongoose climbing brush.

I notice that your target customer appears to be someone who "cares about environmentally friendly materials", but also "demands" natural bristles. Personally, I find that a rather peculiar combination of requirements, given the cruel way in which much of the world's bristle is obtained, and the great difficulty (and expense, presumably) in obtaining cruelty-free bristle, due to the mixing of batches early in the production process.

Where do you get your boar bristle from, please?

Hi there, thank you for your comments and question. It is a difficult balance to meet both environmentally friendly and ethical requirements for everyone when it comes to a climbing brush; using wood instead of plastic handles, using natural hair instead of plastic bristles, the ethical issues that surround boar's hair etc etc. People will always have different requirements and things that are important to them and you are correct in assuming it's difficult to tick all the boxes whilst providing something that is affordable enough for people to buy. It is a delicate balance that we would love to address more in the future when our brand is more established and we can offer a wider range of products, i.e such as the vegan brush etc.

We obtain our brushes from outside of the UK. Sadly we were not able to obtain any bristles from within the UK that had not first come from other countries such as China or India. Without travelling to the exact place that the hair has originated from, we can only tell you that we have taken as many steps as possible to satisfy ourselves that the hair has been ethically obtained. We are aware of other UKC forum threads where boar's hair bristle used in climbing brushes have been a lengthy, and somewhat heated, discussion point and this was taken into account with our research as much as we possibly could.

All the best.
