I'm sorry to let you all know that Nick Bond (aka astley007) lost his battle with cancer last Monday. He passed away peacefully with his partner Bev by his side.
A lot of the Sheffield, Lancashire and Manchester climbers will have known Nick for some time. As he has been on the scene Locally, Nationally and Internationally for some 35 years or so. From the early days dossing in the Stoney Woodshed to recent trips to Kalymnos, and so many fond memories in between.
Nick was also heavily involved with the BMC, putting a lot back into the local and national committees and councils, together with the Climbing Walls, Guidebooks, WiltonFest and the Injuries Prevention Symposium. Nick, using his professional connections to source presenters.
Always the professional, Nick worked to the end, only a week or so ago.
His friends, mates, many climbing partners over the years will miss his warm company and his cheeky banter.
Nick leaves two children, Tom and Liz and partner Bev.
Funeral arrangements are as follows:
4pm on Friday 21st July at Howe Bridge Crematorium, off Lovers Lane, Atherton, Manchester, M46 0PZ
With the wake following to be held at Gin Pit Club, Ley Road, Astley, M29 7DW.
Family flowers only please.
However donations to Climbers Against Cancer or Macmillan Cancer Support are welcome.
Dress code is whatever you feel Nick would've wanted you to wear
Hi Ian, I didn't know Nick and pretty sure we never met, but from his posts on here I'm equally sure that that was my loss. Cancer has claimed so many friends over the years...
Really sad to hear this news. Thinking back it should have been obvious to me, but when I spoke to him at the AGM he gave no impression that things were serious, his enthusiasm for climbing seem undiminished. And its that enthusiasm, combined with his humour and positive, no bullsh*t attitude that brightened up many national council meetings (and the bar afterwards).
I also didn't realise he posted on UKC, but finding this thread is a great reminder of his sense of humour
A very sad loss. Nick did loads for the BMC and climbing in general and unselfishly carried on with this whilst seriously ill. I very much admired his enthusiasm for climbing and his plain speaking and laterly his attitude in the face of the blight that is cancer. Always good fun on UKC as well.
