Heading to Arolla for 10 days next week for my first Alps trip. I'm looking at getting the Vallais Alps West guidebook. Does anyone know a) whether this is any good, especially for a group of non-hardcore mountaineers/ climbers (looking for classic PDs, VS-E1s, 6as) and b) if there are any others for the region that would be good?

It's good, if getting a little dated, for alpine routes. It doesn't have much pure rock climbing in.

How about Schweiz Plaisir West for rock climbing?

I don't have it but I think that is the standard rock guide. The SAC guides are excellent but in French (or German) - available on their website.

The camping arolla website has a free downloadable guide with a quite few alpine routes in it.
