THE BEST OF MOUNTAINFILM ON TOUR
Royal Geographical Society, London SW7 2AR

Enjoy specially selected films from America's most prestigious mountain film festival. Telluride Mountainfilm mountainfilm.org is a documentary film festival that showcases non-fiction stories about environmental, cultural, climbing, political and social justice issues that matter. The films will be introduced by Ben Ayers.

The full programme is to be confirmed but includes the European premiere of The Last Honey Hunter.. This charming film is set in the mist-shrouded mountains of Nepal's Hongu River valley where the Kulung people carve their lives out of the land and practice an ancient form of animism structured around the god, Rongkemi. You will find a wiry and unassuming man named Mauli Dhan Rai, who is believed to have been chosen by the gods for the perilous rite of honey harvesting. The task, which involves climbing rope ladders up sheer cliffs to cut down combs made by the world's largest honeybee, is extremely dangerous. This is a spiritual pursuit soaked in myth that the Kulung believe taps directly into the gods. This film, a 2016 Mountainfilm Commitment Grant winner directed by Ben Knight, puts a spotlight on a remarkable practice under threat of modernity.
