Three years ago we took a dog I on a ‘temporary basis’ as the owner was in no condition to look after him for a few days.
Now three years down the line we have still have him and obviously he is here permanently and the owner is no longer contactable (the owner has a drug issue) and in any case when last saw them they were still in no condition to look after a pet.
We are more than happy to keep him but in terms of microchip the previous owners details are on it. We want our details to present itself on the micro chip but don’t want to be in the position where we can not contact the previous owner and questions are asked about why we have him and our right to have him.
The previous owner has moved address several times so the original details relating to that chip wont match.
Does anyone know where we stand to what to do ?
Thanks

I'd ask your vet. They should be able to tell you who to contact in terms of updating the contact details. The main purpose of chips is so the persons responsible for the dog can be contacted if they are found.

Yes,

I just want to know if I am going to open a can of worms and the vet challenging me saying its not my dog.

Call the chip company and ask.

Worst case you can get a second chip tied to your details implanted but you shouldn't need to, I'm sure they'll have a procedure, it can't be an uncommon problem.

Contact the microchip company and explain. If you don't know the company your vet will need to scan the chip and can then give you details.

The chip company will probably try to contact the previous owner but if they get no response should re-register in your name.

As the current keeper of the dog, the microchip should be changed to your address.

You will need the chip number, so assuming the previous owner didn't give you the paperwork you need to get the dog scanned.

When you contact the chip company, they will try to contact the owner on their database on the details they have. If no reply after a certain time they will update to your details. Note this doesn't make you the legal owner. If the old owner ever comes back, legally the dog is still theirs.
