Taking a rough guess at what they mean by commercial partnerships, I suspect it is very unlikely that this is what your subs are being spent on.

I think at the next AGM there should be a proposal put that the officers should be required to ballot membership on any meaningful or major proposals or change Easily done without delay through the web site They should not have autonomy but be answerable to the membership especially considering the potential sums of money involved Just look at the recent renaming debacle! The BMC is now taken by the media as representing the whole spectrum of climbing and walking related sport and that requires the considered opinion of more than a few individuals who may have a vested and possibly financial agenda to consider

Sorry, but do you have any idea how much time or general resources a membership vote would cost.

The renaming thing wasn't led by the staff, it was led by the Exec (which includes the CEO).

The BMC is set to loose Sport England funding so needs to look at alternative funding sources. This was part of the whole rebranding issue. To the extent the new officer is successful in generating commercial / sponsorship income in excess of the officer's costs, the role would be self-funding. It's a serious salary but it probably needs to be in order to attract someone with the right skillset. Conversely, this person would be expected to deliver.

The main concern for members is where will this commercialisation lead. As long as focus on access, conservation, safety and new members is maintained, all will be well and good. If it leads to increased focus on indoor and comps, many people won't be happy.

Let's not prejudge this. It would however be reasonable to ask at the 2018 AGM what this officer has achieved.

The way the BMC works means that the 'officers' (you mean paid staff?) can't implement any major changes without reference to the National Council. That is largely made up of member representatives from the BMC areas voted in by their area membership at an area meeting.

I know it is not a perfect model of democracy but if you change 'Officers - National Council - voting members' to 'Civil Service - Parliament - voting voters' you'll get the idea.

My understanding is that the Sport England funding will reduce but probably not be 'lost'. 20% drop maybe. This is in common with all sports NGB's as Sport England itself has a reduced budget. Historically SE have smiled upon the BMC and mountaineering as generally coming up with the goods.

And in terms of SE funding the BMC is in a reasonably good place. There are some sport NGB's who are almost entirely dependent upon that funding for their existence; the BMC uses it for 'additionality' rather than as an income stream to support core work.
