Arctic explorer Lonnie Dupre from Minnesota has become the first person to solo-summit Denali (AKA Mt McKinley) in January. Dupre arrived at basecamp at the Kahiltna Glacier on 18th December and after spending nearly a month in extremely harsh winter conditions on the mountain, reached the summit on 11th January.
In reply to UKC News: Wasn't Andy Kirkpatrick going to do this too this winter? I'm pretty sure i saw something somewhere where you could help support him by buying bits and pieces.
John Krakauer wrote a brilliant article many years ago about soloing a route on The Devil's Thumb in Alaska and he used curtain rods under his arms for the same purpose.
Too right. I thought I was brave going up TRYFAN in heavy snow/ice alone in winter...
(PS I don't really think it was brave. But Denali solo in January is really something)
