NEWS: Denali climbed solo in January

Lonnie Dupre complete with spruce pole to prevent falling into crevasses, 3 kbArctic explorer Lonnie Dupre from Minnesota has become the first person to solo-summit Denali (AKA Mt McKinley) in January. Dupre arrived at basecamp at the Kahiltna Glacier on 18th December and after spending nearly a month in extremely harsh winter conditions on the mountain, reached the summit on 11th January.

Only 16 people have done it in groups. That kind of puts it into perspective. And only 3 crazy Russians in January...

Wasn't Andy Kirkpatrick going to do this too this winter? I'm pretty sure i saw something somewhere where you could help support him by buying bits and pieces.

John Krakauer wrote a brilliant article many years ago about soloing a route on The Devil's Thumb in Alaska and he used curtain rods under his arms for the same purpose.

Too right. I thought I was brave going up TRYFAN in heavy snow/ice alone in winter...
(PS I don't really think it was brave. But Denali solo in January is really something)
