In reply to count: Those aren't even the most expensive ones: http://arcteryx.com/Product.aspx?EN/Mens/Gloves/Alpha-SV-Glove# However it's worth understanding the design behind these gloves: http://arcteryx.com/video.aspx?EN/video=The-Alpha-Project

It costs somewhere in the region of 170 to design, and take that design into mass production utilising their chosen materials etc. Then there's marketing, and making an actual profit for the company. Plus, because of the brand name, they can probably inflate their prices a touch.

It's basic business really.

If you don't think a glove can be worth 170 quid, don't buy it....

I think I'd agree with you there. I understand that they are probably the most engineered gloves on the market, and there will be more design and testing going into it than your bog standard mountaineering glove. But let's face it, they're gloves, not the space shuttle. How much can redesigning a thumb, knocking out a prototype and sending it to you 'athletes' for feedback cost?

That said, there are gloves from other companies that aren't all that far off in terms of price, and there is no doubt a certain sector of the climbing community that 'need' the latest and greatest gear at any cost. Personally I'm of the opinion that the top climbers would just get on with it they were forced to wear Lidl ski gloves, but that's just me. If they continue to have the gloves in their line up, there must be a market for them I suppose.

I remember being told years ago that gloves are more difficult and more expensive to design and make than any other item of clothing. The better shaped and more dexterous you want them, the harder it is to do. We think they should be cheaper because they're 'just gloves', but I bet it'd be a lot of work to end up with an equivalent product if you started from scratch.
I agree £170 seems expensive, but I'm prepared to conceed that they don't cost that much just because they have the bird skeleton on them.

Made in China? I was checking out some of their other tat last week and disappointed to find that they outsource production seemingly like almost everyone else. Anyway Norrona seem to have surpassed them in 'Quell Planete?' pricing, made in Norway though?

Mind you, their jackets are the complete dogs! You can sort of see why they (can) charge so much.

Gloves aren't going to be the easiest things in the world to design as evidenced by that pair. Huge quantities of R&D and they ended up with a seam right across a major wear point

Norrøna gear is no longer made in Norway, in fact hasn't been probably for quite a long time.

If you see enough of it, compare it closely enough to other major brands and then consider the price, Norrøna leaves very little to be desired.

China has the best technical clothing production facilities in the world, why would a company want their products made anywhere else?

In reply to Dauphin: any glove makers in uk
 Arms Cliff 08 Feb 2013
In reply to Dauphin: That would be great for Canada, but then the gloves would be even more expensive and ould have still travelled quite a long way to get to the UK. It's not particularly un-green to produce things in China as long as they are containerised for transport. It's not as if every pair is flown to the customer in it's own Lear jet (although that may justify the price!)

It's so that Snow and Rock in Covent Garden can sell them to hipsters to wear on the tube.

That may be true, but I think the point might have been the Arc'teryx long claimed that their prices were high because they continued to manufacture in Canada, where, we assume, labour costs are higher. Now that they've outsourced some of their manufacturing to China (like almost everybody else), they can no longer really claim that's a valid reason for having such high prices.

I'm reminded of that Guardian article whinging about expensive, gaudy outdoor clothing, which then went on to say how wonderful a £300 "Emperor's new clothes" jumper was... if only I could find the thread...

<google is your friend, even if you ask it to find 'Observer outdoor clothing ugly', it returns the article you're looking for as the first hit...>
